I started running in january '83 when the Squash club i was in ran
a 5 mile x country at Belfairs park. I thought I was fit but came in 2nd to last. A friend
who had also run that day joking said we should run a marathon after that performance.
Well the joke became a bet.
the bet was that we would both run the Southend Marathon in June of that year just over 3
months away. Well after badly planned training & no other races we both ran it. I ran
for the first 20 miles in about 2:30:00 then at 21 miles I just had to stop, I walked
& jogged the last 5 miles and ended up with a time of 3:53:00. I was very
dissapointed at the time, but knowing what I know now about running I realise it was quite
a good time.
After the usual I'll never run one again, a month later I decided to try again and not
walk this time any of the way. I entered the Norwich marathon in May '84 ran all the way
with a time of 3:21:07. I was then hooked and ran 3 more Marathons in the next 4
months. (what did I know!!) Southend in June, 5 weeks later in 3:13:40. North Kent
in September, 3 months later in 3:04:15 then Canvey in September again 3 weeks later
(madness or what!) in 2:55:47.
I enjoy running & cycling ( a member of Southend Wheelers on & off since 1969) and
have run 8 Marathons to date. age 47.
Train 6 or 7 times a week depending on time of year. 40 - 80miles per week.
